Daily Prompt: Freedom of Facebook | Free/Careless Speech?

Facebook has recently come under attack for failing to enforce its own guidelines on hate speech and violent imagery. Is it a website’s job to moderate the content users post, or should users have freedom to say what they want? Is there a happy medium? If so, how would you structure it?

If a group or page offensively alienates anyone or any idea, I think it should be removed from the site. The things I’ve seen on Facebook have been extremely tasteless to say the least and are the product of a hateful people. Allowing those things to stay up only feeds  the hatred further and there are many young people that are influenced as well. If you’re going to allow all ages to explore your site, then OF COURSE you have to moderate content. Plus, Facebook already has guidelines for these things. I’m curious why they aren’t acting swiftly on these things. Ad traffic?

I don’t think there’s a happy medium for extremist, offensive material, pages, posts, groups, etc. I can’t imagine a structure for it, I just think it should be eliminated. What about you all?
